About Me

I have lived in south Dakota, all of my life. My family is here, my roots are here. While I don't spend alot of time with "family", we always manage to bond together, when times get tough. Gunnar's death is more proof, of that.I also have a huge family of friends, and this "family"also pulls together, in a heart beat, when necessary. My parents live about 70 miles away, my husbands parents live about 7 miles from our house.

Hello, Debey........

No more waiting for these photos!

I don't know if they already had these or if they took them especially for you,
but I have them.

If you click on a photo, you get the high resolution version
and you can download that if you want to.

pirate test/name

My pirate name is:
Iron Jenny Rackham
A pirate's life isn't easy; it takes a tough person. That's okay with you, though, since you a tough person. You have the good fortune of having a good name, since Rackham (pronounced RACKem, not rack-ham) is one of the coolest sounding surnames for a pirate. Arr!

try it, here

OIF WARHORSE NEVER FORGOTTEN GARDEN MEMORIAL

about 3 days ago, i recieved an email, with a forwarded email attached,

exert...........
From: Pittard Dana JH BG MNC-I IAG Commanding General
There is now a memorial set up by 3BDE/3ID on the main road next to the Khan Building across the street from the chapel. The memorial is dedicated to all of our fallen comrades from 4ID, 1ID, 3ID, and the current unit (3BDE/4ID). It was very touching to see the names of 35 of our 36 fallen comrades from 3BCT (I noticed that SGT Michael Martinez' from 1-6 FA was missing --- they will add his name to the wall of heroes).

many search engines later, i've found 2 pictures...link below
http://www.truck-web.us/gallery/insector/3ID_memorial_garden?full=1

i have also emailed the photographer, and extended our thanks, and gratitude...
this has been heavy on my heart for a few days, and having seen pictures, i'm starting to feel better....................debey

update????

well, months have passed by, again
the good, bad, the ugly, i was ''sort of'' quoted in Army Times
how nice of them
to leave out about 75% of what i said, and then publish it 9 months, after the telephone interview.
i published a post, here, before, about the court martial, and then pulled it, less than 24 hours later, as STARS AND STRIPES was all over that one...........that is the main reason i've ''shyed'' away from putting much here.........i'm sure i owe SSG James Parker an apology, for that.

weeds, drought, and weeds

as the drought continues, and everything green is turning more brown, by the day, one thing remains the same....the weeds...in the fields, pastures, lawns and gardens...if it's a pretty shade of green, guarenteed...it's weeds.
we quite mowing lawn weeks ago, and when it turns green, it's gettting sprayed...2-4-d, is no stranger, in my world.
we (the dakota's) made stars & stripes......because of the drought. the artice did not, however, mention this little fact...not all crops that have ''burned up'' can be used as a food source for cattle(IT WILL KILL COWS) as the nitrogen levels are extremely high, in corn that didn't get rain.....I've seen this happen...........dugouts in pastures are drying up, ours included..theweatherman says a chance of rain, on tuesday...his last ''chance'' brought .10 inch...and 95 degree heat an hour later....

Uncle Herm

Herman Arthur Huber (April 11, 1938 - June 3, 2006) Guest Book Sign Guest Book

Herman Arthur Huber Estelline, South Dakota
To View Video Tribute

Herman Arthur Huber was born on April 11, 1938 in Utica, South Dakota the son of Mike and Madge (Hunt) Huber. He died on Saturday, June 3, 2006 at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown, South Dakota at the age of 68.
Herman spent his youth in Volin and Doland, South Dakota attended and graduated from Highmore High School. Upon completion of his education he enlisted in the United State Marine Corps. While in the service he spent basic training in San Diego, CA and then spent the first three years thereafter stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA where he obtained the rank of sergeant. He re-enlisted for six years during which time he trained and worked as a refrigeration and heating mechanic at El Toro Marine Corps Air Station in Irvine, CA. He was then selected to attend USMC Recruiting School at Paris Island, SC and later was assigned at USMC Recruiting Station in Chicago, IL for three years. In July of 1964, he was transferred to Okinawa for 13 months.
Following his years in the Marine Corp Herman spent 16 years in management for McDonalds. In 1987, he married Janice (Freesemann) Rodman in Watertown, South Dakota. He then worked in the Estelline School system for seven years after which he and Jan bought the HiWay Café in Estelline. Together they continued to own and operate the Cafe for 11 years until Herman retired in 1999 due to poor health.
He was a member of the Montgomery Anderson American Legion in Estelline. He enjoyed being outdoors fishing, cooking and most of all spending time with his grandchildren and family.

Funeral Service: 11:00AM, Tuesday, June 6, 2006 American Legion, Estelline, SD

I'd bet there's been a fantastic reunion, in heaven! and, Uncle Herm, we all miss you, just as those, who have gone ahead of you....give Grandpa & Grandma & Gunnar a hug, from us!

funerals & more reality

On 6 june , we (Doug & I) attended my (our) Uncle Herm's funeral...this morning, reality truely hit home...it is true, that Mike and Marge are the only living siblings, that much i'd figured out...what stepped up and slapped my face,(reality style)... was the fact that of all the Huber cousins, we,Debey, Marcy, Cathy, and Jesse are so very fortunate, to still have both of our parents, healthy, & happy (depending on the day!) and with us....here and now, i'm about to confess, that i haven't been much of a daughter, the last 17 months, or so, since Gunnar's death.....not that i don't speak with mom & dad....phone bills back that up!...but, it's been a long, long time, since i've been home, to visit........and, someday, i'm going to be kicking myself in the ass for not going home, more often, while i had the chance....ok...so...that's off my chest.
One thing I have learned, since 13jan2005......"hind sight", and "reality checks" are both really good, at kicking my ass...and i'm getting very good at recognizing ''mr. reality''...and i'm attempting to correct those ''pre-existing'' conditions...So, i'm guessing, one of these very first days, i'm going to grab my grandson, and teach him all about ''roadtrippin"!! see ya soon, MOm & Dad!

MEMORIAL DAY 2006

This week has been really long...and hard..but, today, is finally here. I went to the cemetary last night, and had perfect timming, for once...i was actually there, when the solar spotlight for the flag came on!! Gunnar's ''gold star'' peace light was on, for like 30 minutes, before the flag lit up...if there's every really a ''neat'' time, to go to a cemetary, i still like the evening the best...the pheasents are usually doing there thing, and i've always seen at least one deer, on the 5 mile drive home, in the dark.
to my friends...all of you people, who continue to support me...thank you!!!

i hope i hugged you

One of the blessings in my life was you.
I cried with joy at the moment of your birth.
Your first smile was such a sign of love.
I hope I hugged you then.
When you fell down trying your first step,
I hope I hugged you.
Did you say Dada or Mama first?
I hope I hugged you.
As your eyes lit up seeing the first Christmas tree,
I hope I hugged you.
The day you started school and looked so scared,
I hope I hugged you.
When a friend made you feel bad,
I hope I hugged you.
After I had to make you behave,
I hope I hugged you.
When a lot of your requests were denied,
I hope I hugged you.
When you asked things about life,
I hope I hugged you.
When you did something really good or bad,
I hope I hugged you.
Before God took you from me,
I wish I could have hugged you one more time.

Thank you's & Welcomes

Since Gunnar died, I have been attempting to locate a friend of his...
a kid from northern Minnesota, that had gone to basic training with
Gunnar, at Ft. Knox. by the time I recieved Gunnar's personnal
belongings(inMarch, I think), and found his ''little black book'',& Justins
phone number had been disconnected...there was no address, just
that phone number...anyway, every once in awhile, i'd do a ''search''
for him on the net...NOTHING..i asked the CAO to help me locate this kid
NO LUCK..last week, i stumbled across a new blog....justicesoldier
(good reading)..... http://www.justicesoldier.com/ and there was a link to the Minesota Army National Guard
I filled out their questionaire, and in the comment section i ''begged'' for
someonce assistance..In less than 24hours i recieved a phone call, and an email, from SGT Smith..........to SGT Smith, again, I thank you!, for the contact info for Justin....and for the phone call...the type of conversation I could only have, with someone who is military.
So I sent Justin an email, using the army.mil addy.........
then, along comes Easter Sunday.............
what a mix of emotions,,,,it was our 7th wedding anniversary, and for excitement i was ''sent'' to town, for lumber....so, i detoured, thru walmart, kmart, & shopko...clearance racks provided lotza cool stuff, like snow torpedoes, that you inflate & use like sleds---$3--i bought 'em all---but our joint'' gift'' to mark the day, was trees/bushes...4 of them.....

but the greatest Easter Blessing I have EVER recieved, came over the internet....i cried so hard i couldn't breathe, when i opened outlook, and saw Justin's name...........................................
we have since talked on the phone...and i feel so much better. Justin had known about Gunnar's death
and he, also, has been to Iraq, & back..Welcome home, Justin...and Welcome to our family...
and always remember, there's only one important rule, at my house!!...Never be a STRANGER!

survivor

I haven't been very loyal, to blogging...i remember when i was young, and i thought i would keep a diary, too..I'm trudging thru life, one foot forward..i found this poem, a few days ago....lke the day before Easter..this is a poem that needs to be shared!!i know that i will be using it , more than i want...

My Mom is a Survivor
My mom is a survivor,
or so I've heard it said.
But I can hear her crying
when all others are in bed.
I watch her lay awake at night.
and go to hold her hand.
She doesn't know I'm with her
to help her understand.
But like the sands upon a beach
that never wash away...
I watch over my surviving mom
who thinks of me each day.
She wears a smile for others,
a smile of disguise.
But through Heaven's open door,
I see tears flowing from her eyes.
My mom tries to cope with my death,
to keep my memory alive.
But anyone who knows her
knows it's her way to survive.
As I watch over my surviving mom
through Heaven's open door...
I try to tell her that
Angels protect me forevermore.
I know that doesn't help her,
or ease the burdens she bears.
So if you get a chance,
call to her
And show her that you care.
For no matter what she feels,
my surviving mom has a broken heart
that time won't ever heal.

jelly beans & Easter

Inside of a plastic egg, place a red, green, yellow, orange, black,
White, purple and pink jelly bean. Give the egg and this prayer to
Anyone and everyone.

The Jelly Bean Prayer

A bag full of jelly beans
Colorful and Sweet
It's a prayer - it's a promise
It's a loved ones treat.

Red is for the blood He gave
Green is for the grass He gave
Yellow is for the sun so bright
Orange is for the edge of night

Black is for the sin we made
White is for the grace He gave
Purple is for the hour of sorrow
Pink is for our new tomorrow

May today there be peace within you.
May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.

Gunnar's favorite candy was STARBURST jelly beans....that was he wanted me to send to Iraq, Easter2004. i had no clue, until he called home, wanting to know if the easter bunny had left any candy, that year. so,.......................

Protests

Yesterday was long....see this post...
http://iraqwarnews.net/2006/03/how-low-can-anti-war-crowd-get.html
When Gunnar was young, (that's a dumb saying, he was still 19,when he died), anyway, when he was ''in trouble'', and I'd find out, he always wanted to know, HOW i learned of the incident????My first answer was always "BECAUSE I AM THE MOM!"(i can find out everything!)NOT!!!(All the confessions, after Gunnar died proved that a lie,)! My second response was usually " I HAVE FRIENDS, IN ALL THE RIGHT PLACES!!"(including school!)
Yesterday proves i STILL DO have friends, in ''all'' the right places!
I want to extend a sincere thank you, to every one of you, for answering the ''distress'' call......i couldn't imagine life, without you. Your continued support leaves me speechless....love ya all!....

just in case

TOMORROW
When tomorrow starts without me,
And I'm not there to see,
If the sun should rise and find your eyes
All filled with tears for me;
I wish so much you wouldn't cry
The way you did today,
While thinking of the many things,
We didn't get to say.
I know how much you love me,
As much as I love you,
And each time that you think of me,
I know you'll miss me too;
But when tomorrow starts without me,
Please try to understand,
And took me by the hand,
And said my place was ready,
In heaven far above,
And that I'd have to leave behind
All those I dearly love.
But as I turned to walk away,
A tear fell from my eye
For all my life,
I'd always thought,
I didn't want to die.
I had so much to live for,
So much left yet to do,
It seemed almost impossible,
That I was leaving you
Just even for a while,
I'd say good-bye and kiss you
And maybe see you smile.
But then I fully realized,
That this could never be,
For emptiness and memories,
Would take the place of me.
And when I thought of worldly things,
I might miss come tomorrow,
I thought of you, and when I did,
My heart was filled with sorrow.
But when I walked through heaven's gates,
I felt so much at home.
When God looked down and smiled at me,
From His great golden throne,
He said, "This is eternity,
And all I've promised you.
Today your life on earth is past,
But here life starts anew.
I promise no tomorrow,
But today will always last,
And since each day's the same way
There's no longing for the past.
You have been so faithful,
So trusting and so true.
Though there were times
You did some things
You knew you shouldn't do.
But you have been forgiven
And now at last you're free.
So won't you come and take my hand
And share my life with me?
So when tomorrow starts without me,
Don't think we're far apart,
For every time you think of me,
I'm right here, in your heart.
